Add PhotosAround the year 1818, Saint George's Methodist Episcopal church (now Saint George's United Methodist Church) purchased a lot of land in what was then Penn Township, southeast of the intersection of Coates Street (now Fairmount Avenue) and Schuylkill Seventh (now 16th) Street, for a burying ground to supplement their older burial ground at Crown (now Lawrence) and Sassafras (now Race) Streets and churchyard. Lots in the North West Burial ground were sold until at least 1858.
In 1853, the Hedding Methodist Episcopal church erected a temporary wooden meetinghouse on a corner of the burying ground until a more permanent brick structure was built on another corner of the lot. Those remains not relocated for the construction of the church were removed to Section 203 of Mount Moriah Cemetery in 1868 under a monument that reads "Sacred to the memory of the dead whose remains were removed from the 16th and Coates St. Cemetery of St. Georges M. E. Church Philad'a to this place in the year 1868."
The Hedding Methodist Episcopal church was sold to the Union American Methodist Episcopal Church ca. 1890. The Union A.M.E. congregation occupied the building at least through 1962, and today it houses the Calvary Baptist Church.
