It was on a cold winter day that H.C. Waterman buried his daughter, Carrie. This was the first burial of a white person of which there is a record. The burial spot was on land owned at that time by George Tanner, who had given Waterman consent to bury the child there.
The records disclose that only five days later, on Dec. 11, Louis LaBoute was buried in the same ground. LaBoute had been a resident of Canada before coming to this country and was 102 years old at the time of his death.
A short time later, the infant child of a Mr. Howell was buried there.
At the time of the three burials, the land was a homestead and there was no title by which the deed could be given. It was not until Nov. 14, 1871, that a cemetery association was formed. The original board of directors, or "trustees" as they were called, included, William H. Budd, E.S. Snow, T.C. Curtis, G. W. Tanner, A.D. Cadwell and J.A. Armstrong.
