Ruth Cecelia (Schoonen) Harrington, 84, passed away Monday, Oct. 29, 2012 in Butte.

She was born May 17, 1928, in Glasgow, to John and Anna (Yestadt) Schoonen. Ruth attended grade school at the State Orphans Home in Twin Bridges, and attended high school at Helena Cathedral and Missoula. She attended the University of Montana in Missoula for two years with assistance from an Elks Scholarship and graduated from Western Montana College in Dillon.

Ruth taught in the Butte school district for 13 years beginning in 1969 with the Grant Grade School and finally at Whittier Grade School. Prior to this she taught in Missoula, Cat Creek, Fish Trap and Feeley schools. Ruth always remarked that she "loved to see the little one's joy."

Ruth and Cy were blessed with 10 children: Donna (Dave) Morgan, Mary (Mike) Hardebeck, Helen (Mike) Patterson, Beth (Mike) Jaeger, Meg (Gary) Blom, John (Julie) Harrington, Rose Harrington, Cecelia (Gary) Helming, Cass Harrington and Joe Harrington.

Ruth is survived by her grandchildren and spouses, Caroline (Greg) Grimwood, John Morgan, Daniel Morgan, Molly Morgan, Peter Hardebeck, Erinn (Erik) Guzik, Sean (Hilary) Patterson, Mark (Bethany) Jaeger, Lauren (Phillip) Squillace, Rachael Blom, Alyssa Blom, Jenna (David) Reese, Joelle Harrington, Andrew Helming, Kate Helming, Chris Hatfield, Adam Hatfield and Danielle Hatfield.

She is survived by her beloved great-grandchildren, Abigail and McKenzie Grimwood, David Morgan, Eli Hardebeck, Liam Guzik, Annie Patterson, Connor Squillace, Ruby and Riley Reese.

Ruth married Donald "Cy" Harrington on June 7, 1952, at St. Francis Xavier Church in Missoula. Cy passed away May 8, 2012, in Butte, just prior to their 60th wedding anniversary.

Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, John and Anna Schoonen; sisters, Irene Snider, Viola Schoonen, Margaret Whitney; and brothers, Tom Schoo nen (and twin brothers, David and Henry, in infancy); sisters-in-law, Irene Schoonen and Fran Harrington; brothers-in-law, Bob Hunt, Hank Stinger, Bob Whitney, Charles Davis and Elmer Harrington; niece, Karen Stinger; and in-laws, Nora and John Harrington. Her much-loved grandson, Paul, passed away Jan. 6, 2012.

Ruth's surviving siblings are Mary (Ann) Stinger, Tony (Margaret) Schoonen, Dave (Helen) Schoonen, and Fran Hunt; sister-in-law, Mary Claire Davis; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Ruth was an avid reader, a wonderful cook and excellent seamstress. Her hands provided many forms of love to all she cared for. Dad often said that Mom was truly a person who followed the golden rule: "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." Ruth truly walked her Christian faith.

At Ruth's request, there will be no visitation or services. Family will gather to entomb her and Cy's ashes at a later date.

Special thanks to the staff of the Crest Nursing Home for their care and support and to Rocky Mountain Hospice for exceptional service.
