Alex L. Steinmetz of Southwest Portland, a retired machinist, died of heart problems Sunday in a Portland hospital at the age of 81.
A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday in the Chapel of Riverview Abbey Funeral Home. Interment will in Riverview Abbey Mausoleum.
He was born Oct. 8, 1910, in New York City but was raised and schooled in Missoula, Mont. After his marriage to Elizabeth Glantz, he moved to Portland in 1942.
Mr. Steinmetz worked for Union Pacific Railroad for 23 years until his retirement in 1977. A guitarist, he was a member of the Old Time Fiddlers Association and the Hawaiian Steel Guitar Association.
Survivors besides his wife, his daughter, Marlene Whitehead of Carson City, Nev.; sons, Marvin of Austin, Texas, and Darrel of El Monte, Calif; sisters, Esther Caudle of Auburn, Wash, and Helen Roski of Sacramento; brother, Jake of Bremerton, Wash.; two grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.
