Virgil L. Gabel, 63, of Akron died Thursday, Oct. 23, 1997, at his residence following a long illness of cancer.

Services were held Monday, Oct. 27 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Akron with the Rev. William Flemr officiating. Burial was in Riverside Cemetery. Schroeder Funeral Home, Akron was in charge of arrangements.

Pallbearers were Brian Gabel, Daryl Jaster, Darwin Jaster, Steve Gabel, Ernie Gabel, Carl Gabel, Robert Book and Chuck Kopp.

Mr. Gabel was born on May 28, 1934, in rural Akron, the son of Earnest and Minnie (Langelett) Gabel. He attended grade school in Preston Township and high school in Akron.

He married Irene M. Ahrens on Aug. 8, 1952, in Luverne, Minn.

He was a truck driver for 34 years, maintaining his trucks personally.

He enjoyed fishing, camping, and snowmobiling in earlier years and later, enjoyed gardening and electronics work.

He was a Lutheran and a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, serving on the church council several times.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter and her husband, Patricia and Chuck Kopp of Kennewik, Wash.; a son and his wife, Richard and Sue Gabel of Akron; four grandchildren, Jennifer Krug, Brian Gabel, Carin Kopp and Krystal Gabel; a sister and her husband, LaVonne and Clarence Rolfs of Utica, S.D.; two brothers and their wives, Donald and Marcella of Hawarden, Iowa, and Eldon and Viola of Akron; two half-sisters. Violet Sampson of Pleasantville, Iowa and Faye Woods of Las Vegas, Nev.; and several nieces and nephews.
