She was born in Weicha on 14 July 1837. Her parents, John Gross and Gertrude née Lowke from Nechern, live in Serbin. When she received the washing of holy baptism she was given the Christian name Johanna Christiana. She was in a loving household during her childhood years and she attended school where she received the necessary instruction in Christianity and other subject areas. After the renewal of her baptismal covenant, she stayed with her parents until she was 20 years old and married Ernest Menzel, at that time a mixer in Zoblitz. The couple immigrated to Texas in 1859 and they had nine peaceful years together as a married couple. With God's blessings she gave birth to four children, of which a daughter has preceded her to eternity. Two sons and one daughter remain behind. With regards to her last illness, she became sick this past Monday, 14 days ago, with a high fever, accompanied by the pains of childbirth from which she departed this past Wednesday afternoon at 2:45. At the time of her death she was 29 years, one month, and eight days old.
