Duane E. Bierbaum of Griswold, died Monday, Sept. 19, 2011, at Mercy Hospital in Council Bluffs at the age of 86 years and two days.
Duane was born Sept. 17, 1925, in Pleasant Township, Cass County, to Harry and Gladys (Ashbaugh) Bierbaum. He joined the Navy on Nov. 17, 1943, and served as a Navy Seaman 1st Class until he was discharged on June 5, 1946. Duane was married to Dorothy Davis on April 17, 1947.
He farmed in the Griswold area for over 60 years. He enjoyed attending the sporting events of his grandchildren. Duane looked forward to going to the Spencer Fair each year and enjoyed attending tractor pulls.
Duane is survived by his children, David (Sue Ann) Bierbaum of Atlantic, Doug (Joyce) Bierbaum of Atlantic, Dwight (Charlette) Bierbaum of Griswold, and Diane Bierbaum of Omaha. Grandchildren, Marc (Sharene) Bierbaum of Omaha, Kristin (John) Dahir of Omaha, Allen (Lora) Bierbaum of Ames, Adam (Amy) Bierbaum of Council Bluffs, Aron (Lindsay) Bierbaum of Ankeny, Shelly (Greg) Asbee of Lake Norman, N.C., Tammy (Randy) Dill of Atlantic, Valerie (Jeff) Carlson of Omaha, Melanie (Ricky) Rohrig of Griswold and Lisa Johnson of Omaha; 14 great- grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. He is also survived by brothers Robert, Donald and Gilbert, and a sister-in-law, Vera Bierbaum.
Duane was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Gladys; his wife of 59 years, Dorothy Davis Bierbaum; his infant daughter, Doris; and his brother, Norman Bierbaum.
Visitation with the family will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 21, from 6-8 p.m. at Hockenberry Family Care in Atlantic. Services for Duane will be Thursday, Sept. 22, at 10:30 a.m. at First Church of Christ in Atlantic with a Military Service at the Atlantic Cemetery to follow.
Aunt B's is taking care of flowers for the family. Hockenberry Family Care in Atlantic is in charge of arrangements.
