John Peter Steen, born Johan Anthon Pederson Steen, was born in Norway and came to America with his parents and other family members in 1854 on a sailing vessel. The trip took 3 months. While living in Wisconsin, John and his brother Ole Pederson Steen, enlisted in the Army and served two years and ten months with Company K, 50th Wisconsin Volunteers Infantry.

In 1888, the Illinois Central Railroad Authorities announced their intention to plat a town on the line between Bruce and Rock Rapids Iowa. John Peter Steen offered to donate 20 acres of his land for the townsite which influenced the railroad company to locate the proposed station on his land. The new town of Steen was named in honor of John P. Steen, and brother Ole Pedersen Steen.
John's farmstead was the only building on the townsite, until the railroad had been surveyed. John was the second Postmaster of Steen. The Post office was established in 1888.

In 1871 John married Lina Maria Clemetson. They lived in Steen until they both passed away in 1897. Lina in July, and John in October. Lina died of consumption, and John died of Cancer.

John and Lina had eleven children, 3 died as children, Nathan, Gilbert and Freddie.
Children that grew to adulthood were, Peter Nicholas, Richard Walter, George Alfred, Julius Almer, William Harold, Ida Sophia, Ada Louise and John August.
