Hedwig Maria "Hedemarie" Kraml Cerny, a native of Linz, Austria, and a longtime resident of Huntsville, passed away Thursday. Mrs. Cerny immigrated to Huntsville in 1957 with her husband, Otto Franz Cerny, who was a member of the Werner Von Braun Rocket Team and a long time NASA employee. She was 83 when she passed away. Mrs. Cerny is survived by one son, Peter Cerny and wife, Peggy; two grandchildren, Allison Cerny Thomas and husband, Stephen, of Huntsville, and Eric Michael Cerny of Atlanta, Ga.; two great-grandchildren, Jackson Wade Thomas and Aidan Caroline Thomas of Huntsville; and several nieces. Her husband, Otto, and her daughter, Claudia Cerny Richardson, preceded her in death. "Oma" as she was called by her family, was a lover of classical music and a former member of the Huntsville Symphony Guild. She was also an avid reader and a member of a local book club before her eyesight failed. During her early years in Huntsville, she was the owner of the "Old Vienna" pastry shop next to the Russell Erskine Hotel in downtown Huntsville. She was an excellent cook, and she had several Austrian recipes in the Huntsville Heritage cookbook.
