The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Swen Carlson (ASN: 1388564), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company M, 131st Infantry Regiment, 33d Division, A.E.F., in Meuse-Argonne, France, 26 September 1918. On his own initiative, Private Carlson crawled out with three other soldiers across an open field for two hundred yards, subject the while to intense artillery and machine-gun fire, to flank three machine-gun emplacements, which were holding up the advance. With his comrades Private Carlson killed seven of the enemy and captured twenty-three prisoners.

Among the thriving business enterprises of Fort Wayne, few have met with greater deserved success in such a short period of time than the Victor Paint & Supply Company. The success that has attended this company has been largely due to the work of S. W. Carlson, half owner of the business, and a young business man of rare judgment and great energy, who was practically reared in the same line that he now follows and who has mastered its every detail through personal contact. Mr. Carlson was born at Chicago, Illinois, November 21, 1898, and is a son of E. T. Carlson, president of E. T. Carlson & Company, operating six retail paint and supply stores in Illinois and Indiana, with the main office at Chicago. S. W. Carlson attended the Chicago graded and high schools, and at the time the United States entered the World war enlisted for service and was assigned to the 131 Infantry, Thirty-third Division, with which he saw sixteen months of service overseas, holding a commission as first lieutenant. Mr. Carlson saw much hard fighting and was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for his heroic devotion to duty during the great Argonne Forest action. Setting out to attack an enemy machine-gun nest, in the face of unusually devastating fire, he so inspired his comrades that three of his men followed him through a perfect hail of bullets and eventually captured the stronghold, taking thirty prisoners, with their weapons, and three machine guns. While guarding the collected prisoners he and his three men were subjected to a severe fire, and all were badly wounded, Lieutenant Carlson being the only one to survive. He was sent to the Base Hospital at Toul, and then to the United States, where he resigned his commission in April, 1919, but reenlisted in 1922 and now holds a first lieutenant's commission in the Officers Reserve Corps. Following the war he attended Northwestern University, Chicago, for a time, and then became associated with his father in the paint and supply business. In 1926 he came to Fort Wayne, which has since been his home, and where he assisted in the organization of the Victor Paint & Supply Company in 1922. The Victor Paint & Supply Company is a co-partnership between Mr. Carlson and L. E. DeBolt, and the store is located at 214- 216 East Main Street. The company has an unusually well organized sales force and has extended its wholesale activities over a wide territory, into Lower Michigan, Northern Indiana and Western Ohio. A paint school is conducted and every member of the sales staff attends. Here problems that have been met in the course of work in the field are worked out and much experimental work is done with the materials handled by the company. The Victor Paint & Supply Company serves the jobber, the dealer and the individual prospect. Particular attention is paid to the farm trade and close cooperation with the painters has meant much in building up and maintaining a fine volume of business. Frequent demonstrations are given for both members of the painting craft and the general public. This not only arouses much interest and subsequent sales, but affords customers an opportunity to gain much valuable knowledge of the practical application and use of the various paint products. The members of the firm believe in advertising, considerable newspaper space being used regularly and the trade and prospects are appealed to through direct matter at regular intervals. In addition to this they have on occasion utilized radio advertising. The Victor Paint & Supply Company carries a most complete stock of advertised products, including plate glass and wallpaper. Particular attention is given to the new projects in the way of building, and architects and purchasing agents are regularly solicited. Mr. Carlson in 1923 was united in marriage with Miss Violet Carlson, who was born at Rockford, Illinois, and to this union there have been born two children: Sven William Jr., born August 11, 1924, and Charles Edward, born January 28, 1929. Mr. Carlson is an active and constructive member of the Fort Wayne Chamber of Commerce. He belongs also to the Masons, Knights of Pythias and American Legion. Aviation is his hobby and favorite recreation, and he received his pilot's license in April, 1929.

Mr. Carlson is an active and constructive member of the Fort Wayne Chamber of Commerce. He belongs also to the Masons, Knights of Pythias and American Legion. Aviation is his hobby and favorite recreation, and he received his pilot's license in April, 1929.

Company M, 131st Infantry. For extraordinary heroism in action in Meuse-Argonne, France, September 26, 1918. On his own initiative, he crawled out with three other soldiers across an open field for two hundred yards, subject the while to intense artillery and machine-gun fire, to flank three machine-gun emplacements, which were holding up the advance.
