Alton William Vordenbaum, descendent of area pioneer German-Texan families, returned to God July 5, 2014.

Born at Selma, Texas, on October 22, 1907, to Friedrich Carl Vordenbaum and Auguste Hierholzer Vordenbaum, he was one of ten siblings, all very dear to him.

He graduated from Main Avenue High School and took some engineering courses from UT-Austin.

He worked 45 years for the Texas Highway Department (now TxDOT), purchasing right-of-way in the later years and walking all the land purchased in District 15 for Interstate 10 and using his three languages to do it. A long-time first-aid instructor for the American Red Cross, in retirement he volunteered many years with wife Oteal for the Christian Assistance Ministry. He was a member of the District 15 Retirees Assn., the Texas Public Employees Assn., and the Hollywood Park Homeowners Assn., where he lived for 48 years.

A long-time member of Grace Lutheran Church, in 1998 he returned to the Methodist church of his childhood and his circuit-riding minister ancestors, joining Bulverde UMC. Always involved, he enjoyed gardening, travel, Texas history, and geneology.

Alton was married 62 years to Oteal Baetge Vordenbaum and is survived by daughter Barbara Pino and son-in-law Frank Pino, many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins and their families, and his loving caretakers, the Cordes and Navarro-Espinoza families. Granted an incredibly long life, he lived it well with energy, optimism, love, and faith.
