Richard Oberlaender Leinbach of Watchung and then Somerset, NJ, formerly of Reading, PA, passed away on Dec. 12, 2012, at home with his family.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, originally of Stuttgart, Germany, his daughters, his sister, and three grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his son, Scott Anthony Leinbach; his brothers Gus O. Leinbach and Harold O. Leinbach; and his sister Jean L. Breitinger Zeimer.
Mr. Leinbach was the son of Harold Miller Leinbach and Dorothy Oberlaender Leinbach. He was the maternal grandson of Mr. Gustav Oberlaender of Wyomissing, PA, a self-made millionaire and the manager of the famous Berkshire Knitting Mills in Reading, PA.
After graduating from Deerfield Academy in 1942, Mr. Leinbach served in the U.S. Army in WWII, where he met his wife, Erna, in 1946. After the war, he attended Cornell University, graduating cum laude in 1950 and beginning his 38-year career at Public Service Electric and Gas in NJ.
For the last four years of his career, he was the Project Manager overseeing the start up and initial phases of the Merrill Creek Reservoir in Harmony Township, NJ, a job that was very rewarding to him, as he was a great lover of nature.
Mr. Leinbach spent a great many years involved in Somerset County Horse 4-H as well as actively serving on the Watchung Borough school board for several years.
Throughout his entire life, he poured himself into his favorite hobby of photography. He continued this love well into his 80s, using animals and nature as his main subjects.
Per his request, Mr. Leinbach was cremated and his ashes were scattered by family in the woods where he enjoyed walking his dog.
