"From the Miller Press, August 9, 2017 (partial article)
On Thursday, August 22, 1957, fire broke out in the Hyde County Implement Company in Highmore when sparks from a welding torch ignited flammable material. The Miller Volunteer Fire Department responded to the Highmore Volunteer Fire Department's request for help. While they were fighting the fire a 500-gallon oil tank in the burning building exploded. Burning oil sprayed over eight of the men fighting the fire. Six were from the Miller Fire Department. Over the following days and weeks, four of the men, all from Miller; Ellsworth Gussler, Siegfried Hoogestraat, Merel Juhl and Lyle Haigh died from their burns.

Miller firemen Lloyd Warren and Robert Gard and Highmore Fireman Ronald Case and Hyde County Sheriff Matt Cisler were also hospitalized for burns, but survived their injuries. Gard was burned when he tried to extinguish the flames on Gussler."
