Richard Duane "Dick" Winkler, 80 years of age, of rural Loomis, passed away on Tuesday, January 8, 2013 at his home north of Loomis. Dick was born May 30, 1932 at their rural home near Bartley, Nebraska, the youngest of four children born to George and Ruby (Farm) Winkler.
The family later moved to Cambridge, Nebraska, residing there during the flood of 1935. Dick remembered when he was three years of age, the family had to move to higher ground and walked barefoot to the cemetery due to the flood. The family lost everything in the flood. After this devastating time, the family relocated to Phelps County.
During his primary education, he attended several rural schools and then graduated from Holdrege High School with the class of 1949. He then engaged in farming with his father and his brother, Robert.
On December 26, 1960 he was united in marriage to Marilyn M. Ricketts at the Methodist Church in Franklin, Nebraska. At this time, Marilyn was teaching school in Minden, Nebraska and Dick was committed to farming. When the school year was over, the couple moved to his parent's farmstead north of Loomis. To this union two children were born: David and Machelle. After several years, the family moved to their current farm six miles north of Loomis.
He attended the Westmark Evangelical Free Church north of Loomis for many years. His passion in life and his true hobby was farming and feeding cattle. He also enjoyed being involved in his grandchildren's activities, especially many fond memories of watching Justin's state basketball tournaments.
Dick was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers: Dale in infancy and Robert Winkler; one sister, Lois Winkler; grandson-in-law, Mitch Redfield; and father-in-law and mother-in-law: Melvin and Jessie Ricketts.
Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Marilyn of rural Loomis; son, David Winkler of rural Loomis; daughter, Machelle Havenridge and her husband, Jim of Franklin, Nebraska; three grandchildren: Meagan Green of Omaha, Nebraska, Justin Winkler and his wife, Crystal of Loomis, and Jessie Havenridge of Franklin; two great-grandchildren: Theron Redfield and Jersi Winkler; sister-in-law, Theone Winker of Holdrege; one niece, Lisa Havens of Holdrege; one nephew, Scott Winkler of Omaha; and a host of other relatives and friends.
