Jennie Scarpa, 89, a residence of La Luz, passed away Friday, Jan. 4, 2013. Jennie was born May 30, 1923 in Edison, N.J., to her parents, Charles and Nina DeCovelo.

She had 13 brothers and sisters and lived through The Great Depression. She was always taking care of her brothers and sisters and building houses with her father. She married Vincent J. Scarpa Sr. in 1942 in Jersey City, N.J., by the JOP; she was married to Vince for 70 years.

Jennie was famous for making cakes and won many awards and ribbons for her baked goods in the Otero County Fair. She worked for the Federal Telephone and Telegraph assembling electronic components in Newark, N.J., in 1943. Jennie and Vince Scarpa lived in Edison in 1945, Lake Hopatcong, N.J., in 1948, Belen in 1971, Alamogordo, in 1979, and finally in La Luz in 1988. Jennie's hobbies included, baking, gardening, sewing and raising grandchildren.

She was a member of The Knights of Columbus in Belen, Lifetime member of the VFW and president of the Doe's Club in the Ladies Auxiliary.

She is survived by her husband, Vince J. Scarpa Sr., of La Luz.

Services will be held Thursday, Jan. 10, at the Alamogordo Funeral Home. Graveside services will be Friday, Jan. 11 at Ft. Stanton Military Cemetery by Alto.
