Texas Department of Public Safety Trooper Chad Matlock said at about 7:10 a.m., a 2009 white Chevrolet pickup was headed northbound on FM 1788 south of CR 160 when a 2000 silver Chevrolet pickup headed southbound went on to the wrong side of the road.

According to a spokeswoman with Midland DPS, the silver pickup that went into the other lane was engaging in an unsafe passing maneuver when the two vehicles struck each other.

Matlock said three people were in the silver truck and one person was in the white truck when the two collided. Three of the men were pronounced dead on the scene and one of the men in the silver pickup was transported to Midland Memorial Hospital with critical injuries.

Francisco Ortega, 26 of Odessa, the driver of the silver pickup, and passenger Joshua Stearns, 27 of New Caney, were pronounced dead on the scene.

Jesus Carballo, 27 of Ehrenberg, Ariz., was another passenger in silver pickup and remained in critical condition at Midland Memorial Hospital as of press time.

Manuel Loera, 47 of Odessa, was the driver of the white pickup truck and also was pronounced dead on the scene.

All men were wearing seat belts except Stearns, and all four men were oilfield workers.

The mangled remains of the two vehicles, both significantly crushed on the front end with the contents strewn about the roadway, rested in the east bar ditch after their occupants were taken from the scene.

DPS Sgt. Hunter Lewis said the two vehicles left the roadway before colliding.

"It looked like they both tried to avoid each other," he said.

No witnesses saw the crash, Lewis said, and troopers were not sure why the silver pickup truck was in the wrong lane of traffic.

Although speed will be a factor in the investigation, Lewis said he's not sure whether one of the vehicles was driving faster than the speed limit.

The scene took several hours to process and clean up, while a helicopter hovered above taking pictures to later reconstruct the accident.
