Flora L. Smith, 86, of Menomonie, died Wednesday, Dec. 2, 1998, at the Dunn County Health Care Center in Menomonie.
The former Flora Kunz was born Aug. 29, 1912, in Apple River, Ill., to Gottlieb and Anna (Stalder) Kunz. She was raised in the Downsville area, attending Downsville Grade School, and graduated from Menomonie High School.
Flora married Clark Smith in 1931 in Menomonie. After their marriage, they farmed in the Town of Dunn. In 1945, they sold the farm and moved into Downsville. After Clark's death, Flora worked at the Downsville School in the hot lunch program and later as a teachers' aide.
Flora was a guide at the Empire in Pine Museum in Downsville from its inception until August 1998. She was an active member of New Hope Lutheran Church in Downsville. She enjoyed quilting and gardening and was a great Dunn County historian.
Flora is survived by two sons, Dean R. (Shirley) Smith of Wauwatosa and Jerry C. (Jane) Smith of Menomonie; five grandchildren, Susan Smith of Wauwatosa, Jeffrey (Laura) Smith of Madison, Steven (Priscilla) Smith of West Bend, Gregory (Beth) Smith of Eagen, Minn., and Ryan Smith of Minneapolis, Minn.; one great-grandson, Jacob Smith; one brother, Alfred Kunz of Downsville; nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Clark; five brothers, Walter, Fred, John, Ernest and Rudy Kunz; and two sisters, Rose Orloff and Emma Scherman.
Funeral services are 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 7, 1998, at New Hope Lutheran Church in Downsville with the Rev. Richard Klabunde officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery in the Town of Dunn.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today (Sunday) at the Olson Funeral Home in Menomonie and one hour prior to services Monday at the church.
