The following afternoon, Bean led about 90 Trivoli volunteers into Peoria, where they went into camp at Camp Lyon, near present day Glen Oak Park. On August 27, 1862, 83 of those Trivoli volunteers were mustered in as Company D of the 86th Regiment of Illinois Volunteer Infantry. James S. Bean, who was initially elected by the men of Co. D to be their Captain, was elected and promoted to Major of the entire regiment, so the men of Co. D then elected Frank Hitchcock to be their Captain.
On September 7, 1862, the men of the 85th & 86th Illinois marched out the gates of Camp Lyon, through the streets of Peoria, with much fanfare, and boarded a train bound for Camp Joe Holt, Jeffersonville, Indiana. Four weeks later, the men of the 85th & 86th were in the field in Kentucky as part of Col. Daniel McCook's Brigade, chasing Confederate troops in Kentucky. On Oct. 8, 1862, the men of McCook's Brigade were engaged with those troops in the Battle of Perryville, Kentucky, the 86th Illinois suffering their first casualties. There would be many more in the years to come. After the Battle of Perryville, Kentucky, the Confederates withdrew from Kentucky and the men of McCook's Brigade marched on to Nashville, Tennessee, where the 86th would go into winter camp.
During the next two and a half years, Private John H. Dillaplain served faithfully in Co. D as the men of the 86th served in Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina and North Carolina. During this time, John was witness to and a participant in numerous battles and skirmishes, some of the bloodiest fighting in the Western Theatre of the war, including the Battles of Chicakamauga, Georgia; Resaca, Georgia; Rome, Georgia, Kennesaw Mountain, Georgia; Peach Tree Creek, Georgia; Jonesboro, Georgia; Averysboro, North Carolina; and Bentonville, North Carolina, to name a few, and marched with Sherman to the Sea.
In the fall of 1863, the men of McCook's Brigade participated in the Campaign for Chattanooga and were very active in the Battle of Chickamauga. After the Union gained control of Chattanooga, the men of McCook's Brigade went into winter camp at Camp McAfee on the southern edge of the Chickamauga Battlefield. In the spring and summer of 1864, the men of McCook's Brigade participated in the Campaign for Atlanta and in the fall, as stated above, marched with Sherman to the Sea. In December of 1864, Savannah, Georgia was taken as an early Christmas present by Sherman and his men for President Abraham Lincoln.
In the late winter of 1864/65 the men of McCook's Brigade began the opening movements of the Carolina Campaign of 1865, which would help bring the war to a close. After the war came to a close, the men of McCook's Briagde marched on to Washington, D.C. where on the 24th day of May, 1865, they marched down Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, D.C. on the 2nd day of the Grand Review. The surviving members of the 86th were finally mustered out of the service on June 6, 1865 in Washington and soon they were on a train bound for Chicago where they were discharged from the service. Shortly after that, the civilian soldiers were back home trying to work their way back into the civilian lives.
