Ralph Kindel Thurston
Mr. Ralph Kindel Thurston, Sr., age 79, of 2068 Cave Spring Road, Rome, formerly of Armuchee, passed away on Monday, August 13, 2012, at his residence.
Mr. Thurston was born in Floyd County, Georgia on August 8, 1933, son of the late Tommy Thurston and the late Sally Neal Thurston. He was also preceded in death by a son-in-law, Paul Burkhalter, by a sister,
Mrs. Minnie Boatfield , and by 2 brothers, General Thurston and Rymon Thurston and was a member of the New Hope Baptist Church in Rosedale. Prior to retirement, he worked for a number of years as a heavy equipment operator for the Local #926.
Survivors include his wife, the former Opal Edwards, to whom he was married on August 10, 1968; 2 daughters, Mrs. Phyllis Ann Burkhalter, Rome, and Mrs. Diane Melton, and her husband, Mike, Rome; a son, Ralph Kindel Thurston, Jr., and his wife, Cricket, Summerville; 4 grandchildren, Tonya Carter, and her husband, Chad, Christopher Melton, and his fiancé, Kim Terrell, Dakota Thurston, and Skyler Thurston; 2 great grandchildren, Amber Carter and Kacie Carter; a sister, Mrs. Dora Trammell, Armuchee; nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, August 15, 2012, at 2pm from the graveside at Rome Midway Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery. The Rev. Ken Johnson will officiate with the American Legion Post #5 Honor Guard presenting military honors.
The family will receive friends at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home on Tuesday from 6 until 8pm. At other hours, they may be contacted at each of their respective residences.
