Johanna Henrika Meenen, daughter of Lumke Hunsinga Heikes was born in Ostriesland, Germany on April 6, 1848 and passed away at her home southwest of Clifton, Kansas on July 11, 1934 at the age of 86 years, 3 months and 5 days.
She was one of a family of six children, three sisters having preceding her in death. She is survived by one sister, Mrs Nettie Carls of Waukarusa, Kansas and one brother, Henry Heikes of Riley Kansas.
She received her education at Altgarnssiel, Bermany and was confirmed in the German Lutheran church at the age of twelve years.
In 1868 she was married to Friedrich H Meenen in Oldenburg, Germany. To this union were born seven children, Bajo J who passed away on October 28, 1893, Bertha Meenen Gerriets of Mount Vernon, Washington, Ludolph E, Fritz H. and John H. all of Clifton, Kansas, Peter J. who passed away on May 20, 1930 at Fremont, Nebr, and one baby boy who passed away in infancy.
In March 1884, she with her husband and family came to America, coming direct to Kansas and after living six miles south of Clifton two years, moved to the farm two miles south of Clifton.
On March 28, 1892, her husband departed this life, leaving her to raise her family and face the responsibilities alone. About 1898 she moved to her present home where has since resided.
Besides her children, sister and brother, she leaves to mourn her passing, sixteen grandchildren, five great grandchildren and many other distant relatives and friends.
She was a woman of true, sterling character, lover her home, and was ever happy when those near and dear to her were about her, and they will greatly treasure her memory.
Funeral services were held at the home Friday morning, July 13 at 10:00 o'clock. Rev. H. R. Campbell of the Presbyterian church was in charge of the services.
Mr and Mrs. L Pfister, Mrs. Frank Seeling, Mrs H.R. Campbell and Mrs. Lillian Kreeck sang "Rock of Ages" and "Jesus Lover of My Soul". The beautiful flowers were carried by the granddaughters, Misses Bertha , Gertrude, and Henrietta Meenen; and Marguerite Clevenger. The body bearers were Fritz, Ludolph Edward, Roger, Henry and Friedrich Meenen. Internment was made in the Riverdale Cemetery.
