Marion, Indiana, Dec. 21, ----- Stephen Snyder, 86 years of age, at one time said to be the wealthiest man in Grant County, died at the county infirmary, near Marion. Mr. Snyder at one time owned nearly 1,500 acres of the best land in the county, situated along the Mississinewa River, about four miles northwest of Marion. At the same time he was owner of a tract of land, near Jalapa, that contained 640 acres. He was the largest buyer of livestock in northern Indiana, was at the head of the Stephen Snyder Packing Company that operated the George W. Steel Pork Packing House.

It is said that 25 years ago Stephen Snyder had the best credit with the Marion banks of any one in the county. The banks gave him almost unlimited credit. At that time he conducted the largest industry in the city, gave employment to the largest number of men and purchased hogs in large quantities, the payment of which aggregated thousands of dollars a day.

It was in this business that he lost his fortune. He is said to have attempted to recover his losses by plunging when the market was in the decline, and his fortune was swept away in a short time. His lands were mortgaged and the beautiful farm for which he paid $18,000 in cash at sheriff's sale, when land was cheap, whet to Philip Matter, now the well-known traction magnate, who had endorsed for him at the Marion bank.

Stephen Snyder, 86 years of age, and once the wealthiest man in Grant County, died in utter poverty at the County Infirmary at Marion. Years ago Snyder owned 2,100 acres of land and was the heaviest buyer of livestock in the county, but he lost his fortune in buying hogs.
