Professional Boxer. He was the Heavyweight Champion of the world fom 1930 to 1932. Probably the most recognized German in the sports world, he was born in Klein Luckow in the Uckermark region of Germany, and grew up in Hamburg. He became famous when he won boxing's heavyweight world championship defeating Jack Sharkey in New York on June 12, 1930. Six years later, with his win over Joe Louis who had been unbeatable up to that point, he became a boxing legend worldwide. Schmeling was an overall world champion, having won 56 of his 70 fights. After his boxing career he became the head of a beverage firm. He was married to the German actress Anny Ondra who died in 1987. Well known for his community support via his foundation which donated millions to help people in need and to charitable organizations. He was awarded Germany's "Großen Bundesverdienstkreuz" (grand service cross of the Republic) in 1977. He died of natural causes at his home in Hollenstadt, Germany.
