Heinrich Wilhelm Diedrich Caspar Kortmann was born April 2, 1842 in Deiringsen, Amt Soest, Germany. On the third day of March in the same year he received holy Baptism. His parents were Heinrich Kortmann and Elisabeth K. nee Schulze. He came to America in 1870 and made his home in Nebraska near Dorchester.

On the second day of May 1875 he was united in marriage with Elise Ahlvers by Pastor Jacob Irion. So they pilgrimed together life's journal for about forty-seven years. He was one of the first settlers here in Nebraska who took homesteads. As other pioneer settlers they also experienced all the hardships and difficulties connected with such a life of pioneers. Their toil and trouble was not in vain under the blessing of God he acquired a comfortable fortune. Nine years ago they retired from the farm on the territory of the West Blue and moved to Crete, Nebraska. Mr. Kortmann was also one of the early members of our congregation.

He leaves to mourn his wife, three daughters, and two sons: Mrs. J.B. Welsch of Lincoln, Nebraska, Mrs. Wm. Danekas of Milford, Nebraska; Mrs. Fred Feeken of Crete, Nebraska; Mr. Will and George Kortmann of Dorchester, also eleven grandchildren, one great grand-child, other relatives, and a host of friends. His age was 79 years, 11 months, and 12 days.
