NIAGARA, Wis. - Crescent J. Canavera, 91, of Niagara Township, passed away Sunday, Jan. 20, 2013, at the Oscar G. Johnson Veterans Administration Medical Center in Iron Mountain.

He was born in Niagara on Oct. 13, 1921, son of the late Stephen and Emma (Brown) Canavera, and grew up on a diary farm in Niagara Township.

Crescent graduated from Niagara High School and served his country in the U.S. Navy. He served for three years on the USS Boyle, a destroyer in the North Atlantic, Mediterranean and Pacific Theaters.
Crescent left the Navy in January 1946 and worked in Milwaukee as a licensed welder. Here, he met Grace Dinger from Iowa, and the two were married in 1948. She preceded him in death on March 25, 1982.

In 1954, he bought his father's farm and moved back to Niagara Township. He ran the family farm until his retirement in 1987.

Crescent believed in community service and in Niagara Township, he served both as township supervisor and chairman for more than 40 years. In addition, he was a member of the Niagara Rescue Squad in its early years, an organization he continued to support. He assisted many people over the years in these capacities, always available, always focusing on the issues of the township and its people.

His greatest passion was the land. He enjoyed the long hours of farming, his time in the woods hunting, and in his later years gardening became his passion.

Crescent is survived by his two sons, James and David; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and his two sisters, Aunnie and Joyce.

Crescent leaves behind a legacy of hard work, independence, and the reliance on no outside entity to succeed. His love of the land, especially the Township of Niagara and its people will not be forgotten.

Visitation will be Friday from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Ortman Funeral Home in Norway.

Funeral services will follow Friday at 12:30 p.m. at the funeral home with Fr. Larry Canavera officiating.

Interment will follow at the Norway Township Cemetery.
