Born in Harpendorf, Germany on 23 May 1818 and baptized at the nearby parish of St Johannes Baptist Catholic Church on 25 May 1818 in Steinfeld, Germany. The area was part of the Duchy of Oldenburg prior to German unification in 1871.

Anna Maria married Gerhard Heinrich Bocklage of Dinklage, Germany at St Georg Catholic Church in Vechta, Germany on 7 May 1844 - five months after their son Gerhard Heinrich Bocklage Jr was born. The couple sailed for America from the port of Bremen shortly thereafter, as the family arrived in America via the port of Baltimore on 9 Sep 1844.
