The birth year on the gravestone is wrong. Smith was murdered by Tom Steen March 21, 1921. Joseph Smith had a daughter Minnie(who lived in North Carolina at the time) His WWI registration record in 1918 (Ruby address in Chesterfield County) proves his birthdate as Feb. 19, 1877. Evidently he was buried in a rush at Crossroads and wrong year was put on headstone. And have additional documentation proving Smith's, name, age, physical description and actual birthdate of Feb. 19 1877.
