William Simon Engel was born October 10, 1852 in Philadelphia, the son of Moses Mayor Engel and Sarah Greentree. By 1856, the family was living in California until they returned to Philadelphia sometime before 1872.

Occupations: On the 1880 census, William's occupation was "carpenter". In the 1890 Philadelphia City directory, William was in "shoes". However, on Thursday, February 26, 1891 at 8 P.M., "William S. Engel" was awarded the degree of D.D.S. by the Philadelphia Dental College at their twenty-eighth annual commencement exercises. By the 1920 census, Dr. Engle was practising dentistry in Buckingham, Pennsylvania where he died on February 17, 1930.

in 1876, William married his first wife, Mathilda (b. ~1854), William and Mathilda had one daughter, Bertha (b. ~1877). In 1894, "William S. Engel", wife Mathilda, 40 years, and daughter Bertha, 18 years applied for a passport. On the application, William was 42, born in Philadelphia on October 10, 1852; father was a naturalized citizen; followed the occupation of dentist in Philadelphia. He was 5'7" with a "low" forehead, brown eyes, long nose, proportionate mouth, oval chin, black hair, bronzed complexion, and a long face. On the 1910 census, William is listed as "divorced".

In 1912, William married his second wife, Ella Virginia "Nellie" [Zayotti] Selwood (widow of James Strange Selwood who died in 1903).
