The funeral of Burkhart Funke, held here yesterday afternoon, was largely attended and the floral offerings were numerous and beautiful. Mr. Funke was widely known throughout Madison county and had many friends and acquaintances.
Services were held at 2 o'clock from the Leibler Hotel with Rev. H.J. Bredehoeft in charge. His text was from Psalms 42-1 and 2. Mrs. Al Bohm and Mrs. Oscar Ochs sang two duets, "Face to Face" and "Jesus Lover of My Soul". Burial was in the Marine Cemetery.
William Funke, Orville Ritter, Melvin Funke, Harold Funke, Louis Volz and Clarence Vineyard, six grandchildren of Mr. Funke, served as pallbearers.
Mr. Funke's death occurred Monday afternoon at 12:25 o'clock, due to old age and complications.
Mr. Funke was born August 18, 1846, in Germany. In 1852, at the age of seven years he came to America and resided in Madison county. He lived in Marine for many years. In 1869 he married Miss Christine Accola. After her death August 5, 1920, he left Marine and came to Edwardsville, where he made his home with Mr. and Mrs. Joe Liebler.
Mr. Funke is survived by eight children, Joseph Funke of St. Louis, Casper Funke of Granite City, Mrs. Annie Wiegand, of Marine, Mrs. Lena Ritter and Mrs. Tillie Schmitt of St. Jacob, and Fred Funke and Mrs. Clara Leibler of this city, besides sixteen grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
