Johanne (Johanna) Wilhelmine Christina Hanneman was born in December of 1840 or July of 1841 in Germany. She immigrated in 1870 with her first husband William Gutzman Balls and their children. Her husband and a number of their children died on the ship coming over, possibly of typhoid fever. Johanna, who was pregnant, survived, along with three of their children, William, Eureka and Bertha Balls. After arriving in Milwaukee, WI Johanna gave birth to a daughter, Louise Balls. Johanna married Johann Schmidt in Milwaukee, WI on March 21, 1874. They moved to Grover Township near Peshtigo and later to Marinette and had three children together, Henry (1875-1937), Edward C. (1878-1955) and Emma Wilhelmine Christine (1881-1969). John Smith died October 11, 1915 at the age of 91 years in Marinette, Marinette County, Wisconsin.

An Aged Woman Died This Morning Mrs. Johanna Schmidt Succumbed to Heart Paralysis This Forenoon. Funeral Will Be Held Tuesday. Mrs. Johanna Schmidt succumbed this morning at 8:30 o'clock of heart paralysis at her home, 836 Cleveland avenue. She had been in poor health for four years, but was stricken with her fatal illness but three days ago, Wednesday last. She was born in Germany, July 26, 1841. Upon coming to America she located in Milwaukee where she was married to John Schmidt, March 26, 1874, removing to Grover April 1, 1874. She is survived by thirteen children: Fred Smith, Grover; Christ Smith, Nebraska; Charles Smith, Grover; John Smith, William Smith, Marinette; Mrs. Anna Eggleston, Marinette; Mrs. Wm. Boll, Oconto Falls; Mrs. H.S. Dahl, Marinette; Mrs. A.C. Werely, Kaukauna; Mrs. Fred Roady, Pound; Henry Smith, Ed. Smith, Marinette; and Mrs. J. Gustavson, besides many grandchildren and great grandchildren. The funeral will be held Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the German Lutheran church, the Rev. F. Stromer officiating.

Tuesday Afternoon Many Friends From City and Surrounding Towns Attended Funeral of Mrs. Johanna Schmidt. The funeral of Mrs. Johanna Schmidt, who died a few days ago, was held Tuesday afternoon from the German Lutheran church at 2:30 o'clock. The Rev. F. Stomer officiated at the services and there was a large attendence of friends, many from Peshtigo and Grover coming here for the obsequies. The flowers were in charge of the Misses Tillie Smith, Hattie Dahl, Ruth Dahl, and Margaret Theisen. The casket bearers were: John Gutzman, William Falk, Henry Bakeman, Fred Strutz, Charles Behnke and August Siefeldt. Interment took place in Forest Home Cemetery.
