LEIS, Mahlon A. - Mahlon Arthur Leis, 90, of Tavistock, passed away in the Maples Home for Seniors, Tavistock on Friday, February 15, 2013. He was born at Wellesley on December 13, 1922 a son of the late Ezra E. and Elizabeth (Wagler) Leis. Mahlon graduated from the Ontario Dairy College at Guelph in 1944 and following graduation was a Cheese Maker. He later owned and operated Tavistock Dairy for 25 years and then was an employee of Maple Lane Dairy. He was a faithful member of Tavistock Mennonite Church serving as Sunday School Teacher and Superintendent, Trustee, Elder and MYF Sponsor. Along with Marie and other friends he was co-founder of Hidden Acres Mennonite Camp. Mahlon was a former member of the Tavistock Volunteer Fire Department where he served as Fire Chief as well as Fire Chief of the Township of East Zorra. He was a faithful member of the Tavistock Men's Club where he was Past President and had served as Chairman of the Annual Sauerkraut Supper for many years. After his retirement from Maple Lane Dairy he was a high school bus driver for 10 years. Mahlon was the husband of the former Marie Kathryn Zehr whom he married on September 15, 1943; the father of Gerald "Jerry" Leis (deceased June 28, 1990), Robert "Bob" Leis (deceased August 22, 1997), Gloria and husband Bill Wettlaufer, Elaine and husband Jim Weicker, all of Tavistock; the Canadian father to Wilmer and Janet Martin of Waterloo; grandfather of Scott and Erika Wettlaufer, Angela Wettlaufer, Jeff and Miranda Weicker, Jamie and Jenn Weicker, Julie and Michael Hawkins, Jennifer Filmore, Kelly and Joel Harbin; Canadian grandparents to Janelle Martin, Alan and Christiane Martin; great grandfather of Emily and Joshua Wettlaufer, Morgan and Blake Weicker, Benjamin and Addison Weicker, Mia and Stella Hawkins, Chloee Filmore, Tye and Chase Wagner, Matthew and Miriam Martin; brother-in-law of Ruth Leis, Geraldine Leis, LaVone Gascho, Lorraine Boldt, Shirley and Carl Zehr, Iva Smith, Edward and Jean Zehr, Ken and Karen Zehr and Carol Satchell. Besides his parents and sons, he was predeceased by his father-in-law and mother-in-law, John and Clara Zehr; his brothers Harold Leis and Herbert Leis; "Zehr" sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Anna Mae and Oscar Leis, Leola and Omar Wagler, Harold Zehr, Donald and Donna Zehr, John Gascho, Victor Boldt and Ross Smith. Relatives and friends were received in the Francis Funeral Home, 77 Woodstock St. N., Tavistock on Sunday. The funeral service was held in Tavistock Mennonite Church on Monday, February 18, 2013 at 2 p.m. The Rev. Paul Adams officiated. Spring interment in East Zorra Mennonite Cemetery, 16th Line.
