Dr. Koegel was born in Fort Wayne, Indiana and lived most of his life in Marion, Indiana, where he retired as an optometrist after 55 years of service. He moved to the Palm Coast area in 2003 from Pembroke Pines, Fla., with his daughter and son-in-law, Marcia and Albert Salvatore.Dr. Koegel attended University of Illinois, where he was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. He graduated from Northern Illinois College of Optometry with a D.O. degree. Later, he earned an honorary degree of Doctor of Ocular Science-D.O.A. and received an A.B. degree in biology from Marion College, Marion.He was very active in First Christian Church in Marion, serving as a deacon for many years and a member of the building committee. He was a life member of the Scottish Rite of Fort Wayne and a 61- year member of the Samaritan Lodge F&AM 105, Marion, having received the 33rd degree. He also was a 60-plus year member of the Elks Lodge No. 195 in Marion, where he served as past exalted ruler twice and secretary for a number of years. In November 2004, he had been a member of Rotary International for 66 years and was a Paul Harris Fellow.Dr. Koegel's major achievement was having an 80-year active membership in the Boy Scouts of America. He served as sea scout skipper, scoutmaster, neighborhood commissioner, vice president of Meshingomesia Council, member of executive board and attended two National Jamborees. Dr. Koegel was a Life Scout, Eagle Scout, recipient of the Silver Beaver Award, and a member of Order of Arrow. In 2002, he was awarded The Daniel Carter Beard Masonic Scouter Award, and in January of this year he received his 80-year pin from Troop 402 in Palm Coast. Dr. Koegel traveled to Europe more than 12 times and throughout the United States after retiring.Additional survivors include sons and daughters-in-law, John (Chris) and Deanne Koegel, Marion, and William "Hank" Koegel and Angie Lasagna, Shawnee Mission, Kan.; daughter, Kathleen Koegel and son, Andrew Koegel, both of Marion; a brother, George Koegel, Fort Wayne; grandchildren, Gina and Nino Salvatore, Jennifer and Wendy Koegel, Mark and John Koegel, Joshua, Noah and Patrick Koegel; great-grandchildren, Garry Shaw and Dakota Russell; and great-great-granddaughter, Alexis Shaw.
