Shirley Virginia Mikula, age 87, of Manistee died Friday evening, Feb. 22, 2013 at the Manistee County Medical Care Facility.

She was born July 22, 1925 in Detroit, the daughter of the late Edward C. and Irene L. (Kenney) Ziemba. She came to Manistee as a child with her parents in the early 1930's. Shirley was a graduate of Manistee High School with the class of 1943. She married Raphael T. Mikula on March 2, 1946 at Guardian Angels Catholic Church in Manistee. They had celebrated over 56 years of marriage together before Raphael died on May 29, 2002.

After her marriage Shirley was employed for ten years with the Michigan Bell Telephone Company as a telephone operator. She devoted her life to raising her family and caring for her home. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, being in the outdoors, reading, working on word puzzles and her weekly Sunday morning breakfast dates with her family at the Bungalow Inn. She was a lady with a great sense of humor. She was a member of Saint Joseph Catholic Church of Manistee.

Shirley is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Lawrence "Larry" and Gloria Mikula of Brandon, Fla. and Timothy and Yvonne Mikula of Manistee, four grandchildren, Brad (Leslie) Mikula of Sumter, S.C., Kristin (Bud) Russell of Brandon, Fla., Kody Mikula and Dylan Mikula both of Manistee; three great-grandchildren, Amber Rae Russell and Randy Lee Russell both of Brandon, Fla. and Tyler Mikula of Sumter, S.C., her brother-in-law Wayne Zimmerman of New Berlin, Wis., and her sister-in-law, Carolyn Mikula of Manistee and numerous nieces and nephews.

Shirley was also preceded in death by two sisters and a brother-in-law, Phidelas and Raymond Rogers and Beverly Zimmerman and her sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Bernadine and Harold "Keno" Strzyzewski.

Mass from The Order of Christian Funerals will be celebrated Thursday, Feb. 28 at noon at Saint Joseph Catholic Church in Manistee with Reverend Sylvestre Obwaka Celebrant. Burial will follow at Mount Carmel Cemetery also in Manistee.
