Dean L. Carey, of Biglerville, entered into Heavenly rest with his precious wife, Doris D. Carey, March 6, 2005, as a result of an automobile accident in his hometown.

He was the son of the late Earl and Olivia Newman Carey.

Mr. Carey graduated from Biglerville High School in 1943 and attended the University of Pittsburgh on a football scholarship. He graduated from the University of Pittsburgh School of Business Administration in 1949.

Mr. Carey began his career with Knouse Foods Cooperative, Peach Glen, PA, on July 4, 1949, the same day the new Cooperative began processing fruit. He worked for Knouse Foods for 51 years. In 1966, he was elected President and CEO of the company, a position he held for 34 years. In 2000, he retired from this position and was named president emeritus.

Under his leadership, Knouse Foods grew to become one of the top agricultural cooperatives in the United States, and today is recognized nationally and internationally as a leader in the canned foods industry. Mr. Carey served as an officer for many state, national, and international apple and agricultural organizations.

As an owner of Dean L. Carey Orchards, Mr. Carey received the Outstanding Grower Award from the State Horticultural Association of Pennsylvania in 1994, and was named to the position of Master Farmer, in 2000.

Mr. Carey was a former director of the Pennsylvania Chamber of Business and Industry, a former chairman of Capital Blue Cross, and a former director of C.C.N.B.

A veteran of World War II, having served in the Pacific with the U.S. Navy, Mr. Carey was a proud member of the American Legion and V.F.W. He was also a lifetime member of the Biglerville Fire Company, and of St. Paul's Evangelical Church in Biglerville.

He continued as a loyal supporter of athletics and scholarship at the University of Pittsburgh and Biglerville High School after graduation. Along with his wife, he shared a passion for Gospel music and travel.

Mr. Carey was a loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather, who lived a lifelong commitment to his community.

He was married to the former Doris M. Dugan, of Bendersville, for 55 years and is survived by his son, Dr. Philip Carey, of Carlisle, and a daughter, Juanita Guise, of Mechanicsburg, and two granddaughters, JeNeal and Carena.
