He was born January 30, 1922 in Chicago the son of John and Josephine Maleck. He married Georgia Dafler. He later married Lorraine Strader on June 5, 1965 in Galesburg. She preceded him in death August 22, 2009.
He is survived by four sons, Terry (and Vicki) Maleck of Raleigh, N.C., Tom (and Linda) Maleck of Ellsworth, Maine and Galesburg, Douglas (and Vicki) Williams of Galesburg, and Dean (and Kristi) Williams of Burlington, Iowa and three grandchildren, Erik (and Julie) Maleck, James Maleck, and Jessica Wilder. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother.
LeRoy was raised and educated in Chicago, graduating from Antioch High School in 1940. He graduated from Monroe College of Optometry in 1948. He worked as an optician for Palmer Optical Laboratory in Chicago for two years. He moved to Galesburg in 1950 and worked as an optometrist for Harry Carlson for six years. He continued to work as an optometrist out of his home while working at Maytag as a project engineer for 18 years. He retired from Maytag in 1974 and from private practice in 1984.
He attended First Christian Church in Galesburg. He was a member of Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post 285 and the Knox County Home Workshop.
LeRoy served in the United States Army from 1942 to 1945 during World War II. He was stationed in France. He was awarded the Purple Heart, two Bronze Stars, five Campaign Silver Stars, and in 2004 received the Legion of Honor Medal from the French government. He also authored a book about his time in the service.
Cremation was be accorded. Visitation will be 9 to 10 a.m. Friday, June 14, 2013 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel followed by a graveside memorial service in East Linwood Cemetery. Rev.
