He attended Western Michigan University before working as a draftsman for the Board of Water and Light and later the Department of Natural Resources. He retired in 1992.
He loved coaching football for the Fraternal Order of the Police and his time in the outdoors. He was an avid sports fan, particularly the Detroit Lions, Tigers and Redwings, but above all Michigan State University.
He is survived by his children: Phillip (Ratsamy) Hakenjos of Vermontville and Lisa (Tim) Jones of Cottage Grove, MN; grandchildren, Ian, Rory, Caitlin, Anastasia, Gretchen and Tecumseh; and great-grandchildren, Justin and Aiden; and several siblings.
He was predeceased by his wife of 39 years, Sally.
A graveside service took place on Friday, March 1, 2013, with Rev. Tim Olson officiating.
