Jim was the son of Winton Chandler Ellis and Will Fay Cade. His paternal grandparents were Henry Thomas Ellis, Jr. and Fanny Chandler and his maternal grandparents were Stephen Ingram Cade and Rosa Belle Hanson. All were buried in this cemetery.

In 1942, he enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps where he obtained the rank of 2nd Lieutenant serving as a co-pilot on a B-17 Flying Fortress with the 8th Air Force, 351st Bomb Group, 511th Squadron stationed in Polebrook, England. On his fourth mission, his plane was shot down over Holland, and he spent the next 15 months until the end of the war as a prisoner of war at Stalag Luft 1 in Barth, Germany.

Jim married Hazyl "Iryne" Roby of Athens, Texas shortly after the war began. A daughter, Pamela D Ellis was born to this couple in May 1943 at Athens, Texas . "Iryne" Ellis and their daughter moved to Dallas. Texas while Jim was serving his country during WWII.

Services for "J.W." Ellis Sr., 84, Bullard are scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2003, at the First Baptist Church in Chandler with the Rev. Roy Thoene officiating.

Burial will be in the Chandler Memorial Cemetery under direction of Lloyd James Funeral Home Tyler.

Mr. Ellis died Monday Sept. 15, 2003 in Winnsboro.

He was born March 19, 1919, in Smith County and lived in Chandler most of his life. He was a Baptist and rancher and worked for the Brownsboro Independent School District for nine years. He served in the U.S. Air Force, as a Co-Pilot on a B-17 that was shot down over France. He was a member of the POW Association.

Survivors include his daughters, Kimberly C. Palomo and husband Pablo of Chandler, Sabrina Thoene and husband Todd of Tyler, Jamie VanWinkle and husband James of Yantis; son James W. Ellis and wife Christy of Ben Wheeler; sisters, RoseAnn McClain and Beth Ellis both of Lindale; two grandsons, Adam Dodson and Dalton Ellis and five grandchildren, Eric Smith, Stormie Smith, Petra Palomo, Charlotte Ellis and Amber Ellis.

Pallbearers will be son-in-laws and grandsons.

Visitation will be 6-7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 17, at Lloyd James Funeral Home

Mr. Ellis's eldest surviving daughter, Pamela D Ellis Gregory Hall is living in Dallas, Texas but also owns a home in Hot Springs Village, Arkansas. Her mother, Hazyl "Iryne" Roby Morrison Ellis Munster is now deceased and buried in Restland Memorial Park in Dallas, Texas.

Jim Ellis was married to his second wife, Lucy Helen Horton, the daughter of Dr. A.C. Horton and his wife, Vennie Scott Horton after the war in August 1946 until April 1964. The couple were married for 17 years. There were no children born to this marriage. Lucy died of Leukemia after a brief illness of 3 1/2 months.
