Thomas Slade was the son of Thomas Bog (sometimes spelled Bogue) Slade Sr. and Mary Whitmel Griffin. His mother died when he was very young (before the 1900 census), and he was raised by his two unmarried aunts, Elizabeth and Fanny Penelope Slade, at the Marsh Point plantation. He attended and graduated from the University of North Carolina with a degree in electrical engineering. He was a prominent businessman in the Hamilton area.
