Relatives here received word of the death on Friday afternoon (18 May 1984) of Walter I. Thomas at Mountain View Hospital, State College, Pennsylvania. He is the son of Percy Thomas and the late Ethel Major Thomas and grew up in the Gosper Community. Funeral services were held at State College on Tuesday morning. The family requests memorials be made to Pennsylvania State University, Walter I. Thomas Memorial Fund and mailed to the Agricultural Building or the ALS Society of America. Cards will reach his wife, Margaret Thomas at 523 Sunset Road, State College, Pennsylvania. Percy Thomas accompanied by his granddaughter, Diane McKinley and Lydia Dunbar, both of Grover, Colorado were to fly to Pennsylvania for the services.

Walter Ivan Thomas of 523 Sunset Road, State College died at the Centre Community Hospital follwing a lengthy illness with Amyotrophic Lateral Schlerosis (Lou Gehrig's Disease) He was born 27 March 1919 near Arapahoe, Gosper county, Nebraska, the son of Percy and Ethel Major Thomas. He was married on 15 February 1941 to the former Margaret A. Thompson who survives. He is also survived by his father, Percy Thomas of Arapahoe, one daughter Linda M. Thomas of Chicago, Illinois and two brothers, Dr. Merle Thomas of Altoona and Dr. Howard Thomas of Hayward, Wisconsin. He was a 1937 graduate of Arapahoe high school and for several years was employed by the Civilian Conservation Corps and the U.S. Civil Service. he served in the U.S. Marine Corps during WW II and in the Korean war and attained the rank of Colonel. He received his B.S., M.S. and PhD degrees from Iowa State University. He was an Instructor and Assistant Professor at Iowa State University from 1950 to 1951 and 1953 to 1959. He went to Penn State University in 1959 and served as Associate Professor until 1963 and Professor until 1979. In1964 he was named head of the Department of Agronomy. On 1 July 1969 he became Associate Dean for Research and Associate Director of the Agricultural Experiment Station retiring as Dean-Director (Emeritus) in 1979. He became administrator of Cooperative Research which is now Cooperative Research Service, United States Department of Agriculture, retiring in 1983. Dr. Thomas was an active undergraduate instructor in crop production and graduate instrutor in plant breeding. In addition he was in charge of corn breeding and genetics programs of the Department of Agronomy. For eight years he was senior investigator on the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission supported research project studaying inheritence of ions in corn. He also studied corn breeding for other purposes. he was the author or coauthor of more than 75 popular and technical publications. He served on many crop research committess and panels including Field Crops Research panel, Joint Task Force Corn and Grain Sorghum Research Program, Advisory Committee to the Institute for Research on Land and Water Resources, P.S. U., Cahirman of Experiment Station Committess on Policy, Chairman Northeast Corn Improvement Conference and Experiment Station Directors Association, President Pennsylvania Plant Food Educational Council, President Pinchot Institute for Environmental Forestry Research to coordinate activities among a nine-university consortium with Forest Service activities in the Northeast Region. Dr. Thomas was a Fellow of the American Society of Agronomy, Soil Science Society of America, WAshington Academy of Sciences and the American Association for the Academy of Sciences. He was a member of the State College Presbyterian church of which he was an elder and member of the choir for over 20 years. He was a member of the State College Elks. Funeral services were held at the State College Presbyterian church on Tuesday 22 May at 11:00 with the Reverend Harry L. Strong officiating. Burial was in the Centre County Memorial Park.
