Thomas Michael Scholten passed away peacefully at Penrose Hospital in Colorado Springs, Colo., on Saturday, March 2, 2013, after a brief illness. He was 54.

Tom was born August 14, 1958, in Cadillac, Mich. He was a graduate of Cadillac Area Public Schools, Class of 1976. Tom was a born entertainer. He attended Interlochen Summer Academy for his musical talents and then pursued undergraduate and graduate studies in vocal performance at the University of Michigan.

He moved to Denver, Colo., and after many years of business in corporate sales, he took his music, along with his wife Shari, and followed a new venture and passion in the culinary arts. For five fun-packed and exciting years, they owned and operated the Fritz Alpine Bistro at the base of the gondola at Keystone Resort. They quickly developed an incredible following of friends from around the world that all marveled at the culinary delights, along with the planned and impromptu musical performances that the Fritz became famous for. This business then evolved into an independent catering business that found both Tom and Shari entertaining guests and clients throughout Colorado and many other parts of the world.

Tom always had a passion for living life to the fullest. He loved the West and the mountains and yearned to spend free moments skiing, biking, and golfing. He will be missed by many for his passion and heart.

He is survived by his father and mother, Jerry and Mary Scholten of Cadillac; his wife and best friend, Shari Scholten of Denver; children, Chad, Courtney, Jon and Dan; brothers, John (Barb) of Petoskey, Peter (Charlevoix) and sister, Cathy (Mark) Stilwell of Cadillac, along with eight nieces and nephews.

Cremation took place in Colorado Springs. There will be celebrations of Tom's life at a future date held both in Colorado and Michigan.

A celebration of Tom's life will be held on his birthday, Wednesday, August 14, 2013, at St. Ann Catholic Church in Cadillac, Michigan. Visitation will be from 9 to 10 a.m. with Mass at 10 a.m. A birthday lunch will be served after the service.
