She was the half-sister to Nehemiah Teekell. Nehemiah's mother, Mary (Powers) Tickell, married James M. Slater of Hinds Co., Mississippi, after the death of her first husband, George Tickell (original spelling), son of Richard and Elizabeth (Ogden) Tickell of St. Helena and Livingston Parish, Louisiana, originally from South Carolina.

She had a full brother, James Benjamin Slater, born August 16, 1835 in Hinds Co., Mississippi. Died 1907 in Toro, Sabine Parish, Louisiana.
