Johannes was the son of Rein Johannes Thomasma and Antje Pieters Nauta. He immigrated with his first wife and four children at New York aboard the SS Manhattan out of Liverpool on 21 Apr 1869. Johannes was a bargeman in Friesland and a farmer in America (first working for the railroad upon arrival in Cook Co., IL). The transcription of his headstone does not read "Civil War Veteran", as some records say. Rather, it is a Bible verse - John 3:16.

Johannes was married twice; no death certificate or burial can be found for either wife:

1) Sytske (Sarah) Kuipers, 4 Jun 1859, Bolsward, Friesland, NL
(1834 ~ 1870)
Sytske was born 21 Mar 1834 in Hemelumer, Friesland, NL, daughter of Gatze Kornelis Kuipers and Tryntje Baukes de Jong. Sytske died in Chicago about 1870.

2) Teuntje (Tonette) Hameetman, about 1870, Chicago, IL
(1853 ~ 1880)
Teuntje was born 10 Dec 1853 in Ouddorp, Zuid-Holland, NL, daughter of Job Hameetman and Leentje Sandifort. Teuntje likely died in Allegan Co., MI, around 1880.

Children of Johannes & Sytske:
1. Antje Thomasma (Anna Brink–Tien), 1860 – 1941
2. Gatze (George) Thomasma, 1862 - 1953
3. Trientje Thomasma (Katie Brink), 1865 - 1930
4. Reino Thomasma (Turner), 1868 – 1895

5. Lena Thomasma (Glover), 1871 – 1909
6. Thomas Thomasma, 1873 – 1947
