Walter J. Ernst, 68, and a resident of Grand Island for 40 years, died Friday afternoon (June 1) in a local hospital following a lingering illness (died of pancreatic cancer).

Funeral services will be observed Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock. The Rev. O. A. Graebner, pastor of the Lutheran church, will conduct the service. Burial is to be in Parkview Cemetery at Hastings.

Mr. Ernst was born June 3, 1887, at Walburg, Tex., to the Rev. and Mrs. Louis Ernst. During his childhood and his youth, the family home was in Walburg, in Houston, Tex., Austin, Tex. and in Blue Hill, Neb.

Mr. Ernst began his business career in Blue Hill, when he opened his first bakery. Later, he operated bakeries in Omaha, in Blair and in St. Paul, Neb., before he came to Grand Island 40 years ago.

When he established his bakery here, Mr. Ernst operated it along the lines established and accepted at that time. In the thirties, the continuation of his business demanded a change, and Mr. Ernst put into operation the present method of operation of his bakery.

Mr. Ernst was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Church and was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church of Grand Island. He was affiliated with the Liederkranz Society and with Council 134 of the United Commercial Travelers.

He is survived by his step-mother, Mrs. Marie Ernst, of Blue Hill; one brother, the Rev. Theo Ernst of Cordora, Md.; five sisters, Mrs. Frieda Banget of Staplehurst, Miss Ella Ernst of Cleveland, Ohio., Mrs. Renata Kort and Mrs. Clara Koepke, both of Blue Hill, and Mrs. Agnes Rodenburg of Springfield, Mo.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, Oscar, Louis, David, Paul and Edwin Ernst; and two sisters, Mrs. Alma Deffner and Miss Caroline Ernst.
