Civil War Union Army Officer. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1862, and then offered his services to preserve the Union. He was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in Company H, 6th Pennsylvania Volunteer Cavalry on November 20, 1862. He served in the December 1862 Fredericksburg Campaign, and the May 1862 Chancellorsville Campaign, then was injured falling off his horse. He was honorably discharged due to the injuries on May 22, 1863.

He returned to the University of Pennsylvania, graduation from the Medical School in 1865. He was a main founder of the Philadelphia Obstetrics Society, and served as its secretary until his death in 1872.
