Marie A. Solmon, 88 years 11 months, resident of Detroit Lakes, MN, formerly of Callaway, MN, died Tuesday, October 2, 2012 at Emmanuel Nursing Home in Detroit Lakes.
Marie Anastasia Braun was born on the family farm, October 14, 1923 in Emmet, ND to Arnold and Lauretta (DuChene) Braun. As a young girl, she attended school in Emmet, ND. In 1939, Marie moved with her family to Westbury, MN, and on May 12, 1945, Marie was united in marriage to Floyd Solmon at Assumption Catholic Church, Callaway, MN.
Marie was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She shared her many talents of: vegetable and flower gardening, cooking, baking, canning and hospitality with joy. She was a long time member of the Christian Mothers. Marie was a driving force in the fight against abortion, and a founding member of MCCL; while living in Lawton, Oklahoma, Marie managed a local thrift store for Birthright, an unwed mother support organization. She was enthusiastic about sharing her faith; she found great joy in singing in church and loved reveling in the wonder of God's creation and the world around her. She enthusiastically shared her knowledge and interests in horticulture, history and geography with all.
During her married life Marie lived many places: Fayetteville, North Carolina; Augusta, George; Underwood, North Dakota; Callaway, Minnesota; Crescent City, California; Lennon, Michigan; Callaway again, Richwood, Minnesota, Lawton, Oklahoma, Menahga, Minnesota, and then to Detroit Lakes for the remainder of her life.
Marie and Floyd shared many livelihoods together over the years beginning with WW-II Army life, then farming, a TV repair service, owning and operating Callaway Hardware, a Laundromat, L.P. gas business, plumbing and heating, a sewer and water-line construction business, and a Shaklee distributorship. Marie was the manager and bookkeeper for the businesses.
Marie will be remembered and missed by her husband; Floyd of Detroit Lakes and her children: Eugene of Cleveland, OH, Marty (Mary) Solmon of Detroit Lakes, Virginia (Richard) McDougall of Detroit Lakes, Lauretta (Dan) Kapphahn, Detroit Lakes Area Timothy (Renee) Solmon of Pelican Rapids, Paul (Julie) Solmon of New Hope, Vincent Solmon of Tacoma, WA, Patrick (Loretta) Solmon of Scurry, TX, Arnold (Sheryl) Solmon of Vergas, and Theresa Johnson of Verndale.
