Bernice Ashby, 89, of Denton died Sunday, March 2, 2003, at Denton Community Hospital. She was born Dec. 19, 1913, in Turkey, Texas, to John B. and Beck Hastey Springer. On Oct. 31, 1931, she married J.C. Ashby, who preceded her in death in 1980.
She was employed by Moore Business Forms in the preliminary department and retired in 1976. After her retirement she volunteered in the gift shop at Denton Regional Medical Center, the Courthouse-on-the-Square Museum and R.S.V.P. She delivered meals to shut-ins and was active in church activities.
A funeral service will be Wednesday, March 5, at 2 p.m. at Highland Baptist Church with the Rev. Eddie Schafer and Rex Cole officiating. Burial will follow at Cooper Creek Cemetery.
Visitation will be Tuesday, March 4, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at DeBerry Funeral Directors.
Pallbearers will be grandsons Ronny Carroll, David Carroll, Rex Cole, Jack Ashby Jr., Jeff Ashby and Chad Mosley.
She is survived by daughters, Jonell Carroll of Pilot Point; Jan and husband Jim Cole of Lewisville; daughter-in-law, Pat and husband Tom Williamson of Carrollton; son, Rick and wife Sally Ashby of Longview; sisters, Maurine Martin of Mena, Ark., Mary Jo Martin of Virginia Beach Va. and Theda Barton of Cove, Ark.; brother, Billy Springer of Abernathy; 13 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. A son, Jack D. Ashby, preceded her in death in 1986.
Memorials may be made to the Highland Baptist Church, 600 Thomas, Denton, TX 76201 or the Stroke Center at UT Southwestern Medical School, Attn: Dr. Greybeal, 5323 Harry Hines Blvd., Dallas, TX 75235.
