Published in the Buffalo News from March 18 to March 19, 1999The youngest daughter of 15 children, my great-grandmother had dreams of one day becoming a nurse. She met my great-granfather when she was 10 and they married in 1937. She had her first child, Karl, in March of 1938 and then my grandmother, Gloria, on July 17, 1941. She became a grandmother for the first time on Christmas Eve 1962 and then again when my mother was born in March 1964 and when my other uncle was born in November 1970. My great-grandmother Mabel became a great-grandmother when I was born in 1983. She was widowed 3 years later. Over the next ten years, she witnessed the weddings of all her grandchildren, the death of her only son to Crohn's Disease and the birth of two more great-grandchildren. Up until St. Patrick's Day 1999, My great-grandmother remained strong. The fact that she died from colon cancer was hard. Despite the sadness of her last days, she will always be special to everyone in our family. I love you, grandma Mabel.
