Ida Grove County Pioneer, November 12, 1924, transcribed by Michael Bowen.

The Murphy brothers of Ida Grove sustained a great shock at a very early hour Saturday morning, when they received a long distance message from Chicago announcing the death of their brother Bernard, who passed away at 12:30 am that day. They had learned only two hours before his death, that he was then very ill. The last illness was of such brief duration that his relatives not living in Oak Park, could barely be notified before the end came. Bernard Vincent Murphy was born in Vernon township, Dubuque County, Iowa, January 26, 1884, the son of Daniel and Catherine Murphy. In 1889 the family moved to Sioux City, Iowa, and in 1895 to Ida Grove. Bernard was educated in the schools of Sioux City and Ida Grove, and in the State University of Iowa; he was a graduate of Ida Grove high school class of 1904, and U of I, class of 1908, where he received the degree of Bachelor of Arts. While in high school he played on several of the athletic teams and at the university he won his letter in baseball, football and track. He was the winner of the Max Mayer trophy, a cup awarded to the senior having the best combined record in athletics and in scholarship. After graduation from college he taught history at Clinton, Iowa high school for two years, and coached the football team. He then entered the employ of Allyn & Bacon Publishing company, publishers of high school and college text books, where he became manager of the Catholic school department, with offices in Chicago, and in which business he was engaged at the time of his death. He was of member of the Knights of Columbus, Third and Fourth degrees, and of the Phi Delta Theta college fraternity. In 1914 he was united in marriage to Miss Laura Caron, of Oak Park, IL, in which city Bernard made his residence since his marriage. To this union two sons were born. Bernard is survived by his wife, Mrs. Laura Murphy, his two sons, Bernard, 8 years old and Frank, 6 years old; by his sister, Mrs. J. M. Shea, Sioux City, Iowa and by his brothers, Daniel Murphy, Sioux Falls, SD, William, Robert, Joseph, Emmett and Ray, of Ida Grove. His eldest brother, John, was killed in an automobile accident at Chicago Heights, IL a year ago. Bernard was a yearly visitor in Ida Grove, and during the past summer with his wife visited his relatives here. He and his brother Ray attended the University of Iowa Home-coming on October 25, at which time Bernard was in his usual good health. After the Home-coming it was his intention to make a trip into Ohio on business, and it is thought that while on this trip he contracted the illness that resulted in his death. Services and burial took place at Oak Park, IL, Monday, November 10. J. A. Murphy, J. R. Murphy and Emmett Murphy, his brothers, left Saturday evening for Chicago. Bernard had played golf on election day at the Olympia field and that night had a party of friends in to hear the election returns on the radio. As the evening wore away, he began to feel very ill and went to bed. Thursday, he was taken to the hospital with a well developed case of pneumonia, and sank rapidly. The physician stated that Mr. Murphy probably had the pneumonia in his system two or three days before it was pronounced such, but his good physique caused him to feel only the discomfort of a cold until too late. The funeral services took place Monday at the Church of the Ascension, Oak Part, IL, solemn high mass was conducted by Monsignor Purcell of the Chicago Cathedral, who was a personal friend of Mr. Murphy. He was assisted by Rev. Father Walsh, president of Notre Dame University. The burial took place at All Saints cemetery near Des Plaines, IL. Among those who attended the service were J. A. Murphy, Ray and Emmett Murphy, brothers, of Ida Grove and Mrs. J. M. Shea of Sioux City, a sister. The first two returned to Ida Grove Tuesday, but Emmett and his sister remain for a few days longer.
