C. F. Ladner, 79, Civic, Business Leader Dies

Funeral to be Monday at Cathedral at 10 A. M. -- Was Mayor, Councilman, President of School Board --- Organized Hardware, Insurance. C. F. Ladner, 79 years old, president of the C. F. Ladner Hardware company, former mayor of St. Cloud, and one of the city's most prominent residents, died late Thursday afternoon after an extended illness. He would have been 80 years old on June 29.
At the time of his death he was chairman of the board of directors of the Hardware Mutual Fire Insurance company and also chairman of the board of the Hall Hardware company, both of Minneapolis. In addition to having served as mayor of St. Cloud during the years 1896-1897, Mr. Ladner was a member of the charter commission; which in 1910 and 1911 drafted the present home rule charter under which the city government has operated since its approval in 1912.
The C. F. Ladner Hardware company in St. Cloud is one of the city's pioneer institutions, and is located today in its modern building at the corner of St. Germain street and Sixth avenue upon exactly the same site which saw its founding in 1860 by the Rosenberger brothers.
Married 52 Years Ago Mr. Ladner married Theresa Golling of Lowell, Wisconsin, in Grand Forks (North Dakota) on January 7, 1885, and on January 7, 1935, Mr. and Mrs. Ladner celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in St. Cloud at their home, 713 Seventh avenue north. Mrs. Ladner survives with seven children, who are: Mrs. Vincent (Emily) Murphy, Minneapolis; Alfred, Granite Falls; George, Newark, N. J.; Vera and Karl Ladner, and Mrs. Thomas (Clara) Donlin and Mrs. Pierre (Marian) Thomey, all of St. Cloud. Dr. Eugene Ladner, a son, died of injuries received in an auto accident on November, 1934; and another son, Rudolph, suffered accidental death in a traffic mishap while a student at St. Johns university. There are 21 grandchildren. Three sisters and two brothers also survive Mr. Ladner. They are: Mrs. Emil (Margaret) Puff, St. Cloud; Mrs. John (sic: Joseph) (Theresa) Bessler, Dent (Minnesota); Mrs. John (Anna) Jung and John Ladner of Perham (Minnesota), and Nicholas, San Jose, Calif.
Born in Pennsylvania Charles F. Ladner was born on June 29, 1857 in Pottsville, Pa., coming to Minnesota in 1866 with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Nicholas Ladner, who settled on a farm near Cold Spring. He attended a district school and later took a commercial course at St. Johns university. He taught school for one year in Stearns county, and then clerked in stores at New Munich, Albany and Cold Spring. For 10 years he was a proprietor of his own general store in Arvilla, North Dakota. He came to St. Cloud in 1892 and purchased the hardware store owned by Valentine Batz, who had acquired the establishment in 1880 from the Rosenberger brothers who had founded it in 1860. The present C. F. Ladner Hardware company, of which Mr. Ladner was president, and his son, Karl, secretary-treasurer, is the result of that purchase from Valentine Batz 43 years ago. Mr. Ladner was elected mayor in 1896 and served until the next spring, in1897, when he stepped out of public office.
Organized Insurance Company In 1897 he assisted in organizing the Minnesota State Retail Hardware association, and in 1899, the Retail Hardware Mutual Fire Insurance company of which he was president for 33 years and then chairman of the board of directors. Mr. Ladner served many years on the St. Cloud board of eduction, during several of which he was president of the board. He was elected to the city council in 1912 to take his place upon the first council under the home rule charter plan of government. At the time of his death, he was a member of the St. Cloud planning commission. Mr. Ladner was treasurer of the Cathedral parish for 22 years, serving from 1904 to 1921 and again from 1932 to 1937.
During the World war, he was chairman for Stearns county of the Liberty loan drive. He was an officer of the St. Cloud Agricultural corporation. He held an honorary membership in the St. Cloud Kiwanis club.
During his business career, Mr. Ladner has been associated with the St. Cloud Iron works, the Koch Manufacturing company, the St. Cloud Holding corporation, which owns the bus terminal, and was chairman of the board of directors of the St. Cloud Guaranty State Bank.
The present building occupied by the C. F. Ladner Hardware company in St. Cloud was erected in 1928, and the firm moved into its new quarters on January 14, 1929. Mr. Ladner was an active member of the St. Cloud Chamber of Commerce for a great many years, and a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters, Knights of Columbus, and St. Joseph society.

Note: Charles F. and Theresa Golling Ladner had a daughter, Marie. She was born 17 February 1891 and died 23 January 1993. She is buried at Calvary Cemetery, St. Cloud, Minnesota.
