Obituary for Kathryn "Kay" Huels

Kathryn "Kay" Huels of Carlyle died Friday, April 12, 2013 at the Rosewood Care Center in Alton at the age of 87 years. Kay was born in Coello, Illinois on January 1, 1926, the daughter of Lawrence and Marie (Getto) Vercellino. Kay married Aloys Huels on November 21, 1956 at St. Mary Church in Carlyle, and he survives in Carlyle.

Besides her husband of 57 years, Kay is survived by her sons: Dr. Lawrence Huels and wife Eileen on Alton, David Huels and wife Karen of Marion, and Dr. Michael Huels and wife Lety of Alton; grandchildren: Marc, Eric, Timothy, Abigail and Jessica; sister: Angela Coleman of Niceville, Florida; cousins: Rosalea Prusacki of DuQuoin and Frank Vercellino of Mulkeytown; and sisters-in-law: Cecelia Wiedle of Shattuc, Olive Gray and husband Don of Overland, Missouri and Jane Huels of Carlyle.

Kay graduated from Valier High School in 1943 and received her nursing degree from St. John’s School of Nursing in Springfield, Illinois in 1947 and became a Registered Nurse in 1948. In 1950 she certified as a Public Health Nurse and began her career as Effingham County Nurse. She continued her education at George Peabody College for Teachers in Nashville, Tennessee where she receive a Bachelor of Science Degree in teaching in 1956. That same year she accepted the position of County Nurse of Clinton County and held that position for many years before raising her sons as well as working on the family dairy and grain farm. Kay also found time to volunteer for many organizations throughout her life. Kay was a member of St. Mary Church in Carlyle.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be Tuesday, April 16, 2013 at 10:00 A.M. at St. Mary Church in Carlyle with Fr. George Mauck officiating. The interment will follow at St. Mary Cemetery.

Friends may visit with the Huels family at the Frerker Funeral Home in Carlyle on Monday from 4 to 8:00 P.M. or on Tuesday from 8 to 9:30 A.M.

Expressions of sympathy are suggested to St. Mary Church, St. Mary Cemetery, or to the charity of the donor’s choice and those will be received at the Frerker Funeral Home which is serving the family.
