Lillie Louise Melcher Kurtz was born Feb. 23, 1920 in Rockhouse, Texas to Herman Melcher and Dora Rodiek Melcher. She died peacefully in Bryan, Texas at the age of 91 on Sunday, May 29, 2011.

Lillie married Melvin William Kurtz in Bartlett, Texas on Dec. 14, 1939. They moved to Rosenberg in 1946 where they raised grain, cotton and cattle on their farm for over 50 years. Lillie loved her garden and her family enjoyed the wonderful vegetables and beautiful flowers she loved to share with others. The couple enjoyed dancing and playing cards with their friends.

They became charter members of Peace Lutheran Church in Rosenberg in 1955. Lillie was active in the women's quilting group and regularly attended the Women's Bible Studies and other activities.

Due to their health the couple moved to Bryan, Texas in 2006 to be closer to family members. There they became members of Our Savior Lutheran Church in College Station.

Lillie is preceded in death by her husband of 71 years, Melvin Kurtz; her parents, Herman and Dora Melcher; and her brother, Rubin Melcher.

She is survived by her sons, Lyndon Kurtz and wife, Gail, and Lenert Kurtz and wife, Janet; grandchildren Stephen Kurtz and wife, Dershie, and Jeffrey Kurtz and wife, Leslie; great-grandchildren Kyle Kurtz, Hope Kurtz and Karson Kurtz; one niece, Barbara Melcher Davis and husband, Jimmy; along with other relatives and friends.

Funeral services for Lillie Kurtz will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 2, 2011 at Davis-Greenlawn Funeral Chapel in Rosenberg with Pastor Norm Albertson officiating. Interment will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park in Rosenberg. Visitation will be held from 1 p.m. until service time on Thursday, June 2, 2011 at Davis-Greenlawn Funeral Chapel in Rosenberg.

All are invited to share a light meal at Peace Lutheran Church Fellowship Hall, 1026 Radio Lane, Rosenberg at noon on June 2, to have an opportunity to visit with the family prior to the funeral.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given in Lillie's name to either Peace Lutheran Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 486, Rosenberg, Texas, 77471 or to Our Savior's Lutheran Church, 315 Tauber Street, College Station, Texas, 77840.
